On Positive Thinking
I feel like I've found a bit more strength to get through the rest of my chemo... It was something my mum said that made me think this... I was telling her about yet another one of my new strategies to combat negative thoughts and nausea (currently by trying to recite the words to Modern Major General, but that's another story). She said something about how with repetitive treatments like this it's important to keep trying new things, different tactics each time to deal with it. It made me realise that it's not just about trying to be strong and get through one big tough time, it's like repetitive torture and it builds up, and you can't face it the same way twice.... you have to find a new way to deal with it every single time. As soon as you use one tactic to deal with it, it's used up and useless and you can't use it again, because it does more harm than good because it's become assosciated with the hardship. I'll probably never want to hear Modern Major General again, or do crosswords, or any of the things I've done so far when I've needed something to focus on when my mind just keeps reliving the nausea and dwelling on the chemo drugs running up my veins. It is sort of harder, and easier, realising this. Not only do you have to stay positive, and strong, you've got to keep coming up with new and innovative ways to do it!! But I also FEEL stronger now for having realised I've been doing ok so far. I haven't given in, I do keep looking for new ways to keep a step ahead, even if it's with Gilbert and Sutherland...

So... Does anyone have any ideas they can share for me for new ways to keep my brain occupied? Basically it's like the "purple elephant" thing... you know, when someone says "don't think about the purple elephant" and that's ALL you can think about. Every little twinge of nauseua, or the cold (the IV drips are COLD), or the muscle aches, or smells, remind me of my worst days or the actual treatments, and THEN to top that off I start picturing the treatment in detail because I'm trying NOT to. I need diversionary tactics. Trying to recite poems or songs does seem to work ok so far, so that sort of thing, which if I feel my mind going for the puke pics I can instantly start singing or going over in my head to counter act. Even short meditation exercises maybe? Anything that needs a little bit of focus!

Can you concentrate enough to bead or cross stitch? I do those things for busywork and to numb my mind. I beaded a LOT to numb my mind when I was dealing with the aftermath of my daterape... It must've worked...somewhat?

Maybe play solitare with cards, read stuff really captivating, play hand held games (I am assuming you feel too bad to sit at a computer), I can't think of anymore, but I am sure someone else can.

I played all the games on my cellphone during my second chemo, so they are kinda done already, but the cards are a good idea! I saw a memory coach on TV the other day memorise the sequence of a randomnly shuffled deck of cards... THAT would take some focus!

Yeah and there are different versions of the game you can probably read up on.

Do you know how to knit or crochet? A lot of times concentrating on a pattern will take your mind off of everything else. And at the end you're left with something tangible and pretty. Cross stitch can work the same way. They're all pretty easy to learn if you are interested, and when you're in the midst of a scarf or a blanket, your mind will kind of go quiet and relaxed while your hands do the work.

As for meditation, there's a sanskrit word for inner peace which can be chanted or said in your head. It is "sanishwaraya."

I also own several meditation CDs which combine soothing music with nature sounds, and they help to keep the mind eased.

If you're in to jewellry making at all, you can always get a few kits to keep your mind and fingers occupied.

Random memorisation works, as well. For instance, when I was getting over surgery last month, I worked at memorising all the US states and capitals in alphabetical order. Then I moved on to European countries and capitals. Then I learned the alphabet backwards. I just kept memorising things, which again kept me distracted from all the IVs, bloodwork and pain.

The only other thing I can suggest is to take pampering baths. Fragrant bubbles, soothing oils, etc.

I'm really sorry that you must go through this, and I wish it was easier. It may be little comfort, but I think you are inspiring a LOT of people with how strong you are.

A final suggestion: why not put out a call for all your friends/readers to send you stuff. Looking forward to mail is always something that can keep me smiling. Getting stuff from all over the world, even little trinkets or letters or pictures is great fun. And people enjoy sending things, as well! :)

Some great ideas, thanks! I could crochet myself some more beanies :)

The alphabet is a really good one too, anything that is easy, instant and portable (just in my head) but takes all your concentration is really useful.

When I was preggers with my son I took a hypnobirthing class. Some of the things I learned might work for what you are dealing with too. One of the excersises was where you imagine your self being draped in rainbow colored ribbons. One by one you imagine each color going up you body starting with your toes and on up. This also helps you to relax each part of your body and have a focus. I don't know..it worked for me and I ended up giving birth 100% naturally. The other thing I did was when I had to have an amnio when I was pregnant (son again), I was in a bit of pain. I used the same technique of relaxing each part of my body (they say that that the body experiences less pain and aches if the muscles are relaxed and not held tight). Anyway, I also pictured a balloon just floating. Now tis was helpful, but somewhere the balloon turned red and I keep hearing that song "99 balloons" in my head over and over...but it worked.

Hope this helps. Good luck Selina!

edit: let me know if you want more info on the rainbow meditation. I can copy it from my hypno book and email it to you.

I really like the sewing and knitting idea, especially the knitting your so focused on it. some one told me to try this when I first found out about my blood clot and I had these terrible anxiety attacks, it actually helped. try drawing a square with your fingertips one line at a time on a table(or anywhere where ever you are)for each line that you draw try focusing on the touch and breath in for one line but count to five slowly on the next line breath out for five slowly but count it backwards, I've switched counting sometimes for doing the alphabet and doing it backwards alternate to a triangle and try doing them backwards and so on, I think the whole point was you where using most of your senses so you couldn't concentrate on anxiety or nausea.
So I hope I explained that okay, I'm so terrible at getting thoughts and ideas across:D
I hope that you find something soon:)
((hugs))

Do you play video games? When I need a distraction when I'm sick I turn to games. The benefit is that you can change the game each time, so it stays fresh.

I've been playing Age of Conan lately actually, it's been fun! But the only game I really play, or even own, lol. I try and save it for fun times rather than let it become assosciated with the ick.

I'll add another vote for crochet/knitting. When I am crocheting I go into this weird zone where all I can think about is getting to the end of each row/round, heheh. Very meditative. And then you have something cool at the end for your efforts! Especially fun I think is thread crochet with the tiny steel hooks.
Hmmmm.... how about collage? Get a heap of magazines and grab the scissors and glue. And glitter pens. :)
Write silly haikus and limericks.
Spend hours looking up "funny road signs" on the internet and have a laugh.
Learn origami!

I found a few good ones the other day in an old Cricket magazine from 1974!!

Peggy Babcock.

A critical cricket critic.

Tim, the thin twin tinsmith.

Does this shop stock short socks with spots?

Tom threw Tim three thumtacks.

Lisbeth lisps lengthy lessons.

Slim Sam slid sideways.

A black-backed bath brush.

(That ought to get you started, lol!)

I use mind tricks to go to sleep when my insomnia is being really nasty... the alphabet one is my fav - basically I pick a topic (like girls names, fruits, veges, capital cities etc) then go through each letter of the alphabet.. or if I can't think of a new topic I double-up (Aaron, Abel, Achilles, Adam..). My other fav is meditative visualisation... you imagine a ring, fill it in with different colours or change the colour of the border, then make it a ball, then add a light source, roll it around etc.. or a square which you turn into a cube, make each side a different colour then try to rotate it around. Hope they help :D

When I get stressed or anxious about something and need to take my mind off things I color. Just grab a coloring book and some crayons or colored pencils and just focus on coloring the picture. It sounds silly, but it helps me. You just put all your attention to what color to make this or that part of the picture and block out everything else. And since it's a coloring book you can always throw it away later if it brings back bad memories. Hope you find enough new things to keep you occupied!

late suggestion for the mental games list

how about the "I love my love with a ..." from Alice through the Lookig Glass"?

for every possible letter of the alphabet, why you love, why you hate, what you feed him, what is his name and where he lives

so

I love my love with an A because he is Attentive, I hate him because he is Acerbic, I feed him on Ants, his name is Adric and he lives in Ashton-under-Lyme

you are excused XYZ

OH and a chemo taking friend reccommends pineapple juice slush. She freezes juice in ice cubes and whizzes the cubes in the processor to make something like a "Slush Puppy" but with vitamins and without the tongue staining blue dye.
